We're a husband and wife team who met in 2000 and we've been inseparable ever since. If you see us out in public we will be walking arm in arm and if you see us out riding, our bikes will be linked in tandem.
We ride this unusual rig because Cheryl has a condition called CMT (Charcot- Marie-Tooth Disease) which is a progressive peripheral neuropathy condition. It causes a degeneration of the nerves in the extremities which leads to an atrophy of the muscles. The results for her is a severe foot drop condition and diminished muscle use below the knees as well as a weakening of the hands. While wearing AFO braces on her feet/legs to assist with walking she can cover less than 2 miles before her legs are exhausted.
Nathan grew up being a bit of an outdoor junkie and a hopeless romantic. A little thing like his wife's feet not working wasn't going to make her Prince of Possibility give up on going for bike rides together. After a few failed trials, lots of research and the selling of some of his collectables to fund his expensive bike experiment he bought the perfect bike set. Now Cheryl is hooked and always eager to get the bikes out and go for a long ride.
Our loving relationship and unusual cycle have earned us the nickname of The Love Train in our recumbent riding group.
Nathan is a Realtor with Dunnigan Realtors. We live in the McKinley Park neighborhood so Nathan specialized his business in working with these beautiful older East Sacramento homes. His great appreciation for old wood, coved ceilings and antiques comes from a childhood of helping his mom with her antique shops and numerous antique shows and translates into a passion for older properties.
If you would like to contact Nathan about anything real estate related please call him at 916-969-7379, email him at nathan@east-sac.com or visit his web site at east-sac.com or view his blog here.
Up to March 2010 Cheryl worked as the Director of Community Development for the CMTA (Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association), the national non-profit organization dedicated to the condition that she has. She managed the organizations 50+ support groups nation wide as well as all the grass roots level fundraising. Since joining the company she added 4 new groups per month and helped build the companies outreach to other patients like herself.
If you would like to know more about what CMT is this is a great summary http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charcot-Marie-Tooth_disease.
