It is a Delta style trike (two wheels in back and one in front) similar to the popular Big Wheels of Nathan's misspent youth. Having three wheels and a low center of gravity provide for great stability so Cheryl can ride solo and never have to worry about getting her uncooperative feet down at a stop, yet it's not as low as many of the Tadpole style trikes (one wheel in back and two up front) that would be difficult for her to get in and out of.
We own two of these three wheeled cycle and link them together to make one super cycle by taking the front wheel off Cheryl's and attaching it to a tandem coupling in the back of Nathan's, thus making a 5 wheeled recumbent tandem cycle.
With the two cycles linked together we still have independent pedaling, gearing and cadence to perfectly accommodate our different pedaling powers. It also averages out the speed and distance we can go. Our record ride so far is over 50 miles where Cheryl's record in the past was just over 10 miles on a standard bike. We’re not the fastest riders out there so we make sure that we focus on enjoying the journey along the way.
Another great advantage of riding a recumbent is that it tends to use less calf muscles and more of the upper leg muscles when compared to standard bikes. Since CMT greatly affects the feet and calves this is one more reason riding recumbent makes such great sense for Cheryl.
